NOTES:
  • In 1853, the U.S. Government voted to slightly decrease the weight of various silver coins due to the rising value of silver compared to gold. To indicate this change, half-dimes, dimes quarters and half dollars minted from 1853-1855 included arrows on either side of the date on the obverse. In addition, quarters and half dollars included a very distinctive ray pattern on the reverse. Impressing the rays into the reverse dies required an extra operation (and therefore more time and cost), however, and this practice was dropped after the first year leaving 1853 the only year to have both arows and rays on the quarters and half dollars. The curent Dansco 7070 "U.S. Type" album contains slots for the "Seated Liberty Quarter (1853-55) with Arrows" and "Seated Liberty Half Dollar (1853-55) with Arrows," but does not include holes for the separate "Arrows & Rays" versions that I have digitially included here.
  • Similarly, the Seated Liberty Quarters and Half Dollars minted in 1873 and 1874 were changed to include arrows on either side of the date, resulting in a unique design that included both arrows on the obverse and a motto on the reverse. These versions are also not included in the current 7070 album and I have digitally included holes for them here.
  • While the 7070 album generally includes types for the years 1800 - 2000, there is no slot for the early half dollars that were made from 1801-1807 (presumably because most years are prohibitively expensive in decent grades). The 1807 Draped Bust "Heraldic Eagle" Half Dollar is the most common and least expensive year, however, and I managed to pick up one in decent enough shape to include here.
  • Similarly, the 7070 album does not include slots for the various types of quarters minted between 1801 and 1831, again presumably because all years are rare and prohibitively expensive for most collectors. Unfortunately, I don't expect to own any of them anytime soon (if ever), so I have not added holes for them.
