U.S. Coin Proof Type Set

Proof coins are created using special dies and blanks and are usually struck multiple times with extra pressure to produce exceedingly crisp details. Most proofs also have mirrored (highly reflective) fields, although some were produced with a "matte" or "silk" finish as well. Proof coins were produced specifically for collectors and were not intended for general circulation, and as a result they are generally much scarcer and much more expensive than regular coins for the same year.

I have proof versions of many of the coins in my 7070 U.S. Type Set album, but the majority of them are certified and slabbed due to their higher value and, as such, won't actually fit into the album holes. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to create an all-digital U.S. Type Album just featuring my proof coins.

Please note the following:

  • I have tried to get at least one proof example of each major type without worrying about all the many sub-variations for each type.

  • Some coins types either have no proofs minted for them (e.g., Standing Liberty Quarters) or else have so few that the ones in existence are prohibitively rare and expensive (e.g., Peace Dollars, classic gold coinage, etc.). I don't have any of those.

  • Proof coins are notoriously difficult to photograph, especially when they are encased in plastic slabs. I have tried various lighting and positioning techniques to preserve the details while minimizing the chances of having my camera reflected in the image, so you'll notice the coins don't all look the same.

  • For coins that have been graded and certified by a third-party grading company, I have indicated the grade below the name (PR=PCGS, PF=NGC)
