Soon after filling my Dansco 7070 (U.S. Coins Type) Album, I decided to see if I could do something similar with U.S. currency (a.k.a. "paper money"). I am not aware of any such commercially available album, so I started doing it on my own.
This is my digital online U.S. Paper Money Type Album, which includes photographs of all the notes currently in my possession, including Legal Tender Notes, Silver Certificates, Gold Certificates and Federal Reserve Notes. As much as possible, I have tried to include detailed information about each note in my collection, but please remember that I only discuss notes that I actually possess.
Please note the following:
- Because this is supposed to be a "type" set, I only include significant variations from one series to the next. These variations include major design changes, relocation of various elements (such as the seal or denomination), addition of text (such as "IN GOD WE TRUST"), etc.
- My collection focuses primarily on notes from the year 1900 through the year 2000. I do have a small number of notes that predate 1900, but most early notes are very expensive in decent grades. At the moment, I am not interested in collecting modern notes that are readily available in commerce, which means that my collection does not include any of the colorized, large head portrait notes introduced in the late 1900s and into the 21st century.
- My collection currently includes only $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. Once again, higher denominations in good quality can get very expensive very quickly.
- My collection does not, in general, contain notes that are particularly rare or valuable because, well, I can't afford them. Over time I have, however, added a few select notes that might be considered semi-rare and valuable, except that they are lesser grade examples.
- My collection is a continuous work in progress and I hope to add additional notes and/or updgrade the notes I currently own as time and budget permits.
